Saturday's Ryman North action review

By David Watters

Cray Wanderers moved seven points clear at the top of the Ryman North table on Saturday after winning 2-1 at Witham Town, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

A Simon Glover own goal gave the Wands an early fifth minute lead that Ben Hunt doubled with a header in the 23rd minute. The Essex side pulled one back with a Lee Townrow effort five minutes before the break but Cray held firm for the points.

AFC Hornchurch moved into second spot after winning at lowly Barkingside by the same scoreline.

Former Side player David Knight broke the deadlock on 65 minutes from the penalty spot and he doubled that lead just two minutes later. Baff Addae reduced the arrears less than a minute later but that proved to be the final goal.

Aveley were the day`s biggest winners, hammering lowly Redbridge 6-1 at Mill Field.

It was only 1-0 to the Millers at half-time, thanks to Petrit Elbi`s goal, but the second half saw Alex Teniola with two, Michael Alaile, Liam Nash and a second for Elbi make it six – Billy Drake replying.

Wroxham had Andy Howell dismissed as they sufferd a 4-2 defeat at home against Great Wakering Rovers.

But by the time they were reduced to ten-men the Yachtsmen were already 4-2 down to goals from Jay Nash, Jake Gordon with two and John Easterford – Jamie Forshaw and Seamus Kelleher replying.

A 51st minute Liam Thomas own goal eventually proved enough for Dereham Town at home against Heybridge Swifts, while the day`s only other game saw Soham Town Rangers and Phoenix Sports share a 1-1 draw at Julius Martin Lane.

Both goals coming in the final six minutes with Giannoulis Fakinos giving the visitors the lead and Ross Paterson levelling a minute from time.
