Saturday's Ryman North action review

By David Watters

Cray Wanderers missed a great chance to reduce the arrears at the top of the Ryman North table on Saturday after leaders AFC Sudbury were held to a 1-1 home draw by now third-placed AFC Hornchurch, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

However, the Wands suffered a 3-2 defeat at Hayes Lane, so in fact Sudbury increased their advantage to six points.

In front of a decent crowd of 403 at the Wardale Williams Stadium, a tight game saw both goals come within three minutes of each other. George Clarke broke the deadlock to give the home side a 65th minute lead that George Purcell cancelled out.

Brightlingsea Regent came from two goals down to secure a 3-2 victory at Cray and move into seventh spot, just two points off a top five spot.

Cray took the lead on 14 minutes through Ben Hunt. Eight minutes later and Brightlingsea went further behind when Hunt grabbed his and Cray’s second.

But Regent got back into the game quickly when Jake Clowsley scored to make it 2-1 just 2 minutes later. And Brightlingsea kept up their momentum when Russell Malton levelled the scores at 2-2 with just 28 minutes played.

The visitors made a bright start after the break to go ahead for the first time in the match when Malton added his second of the match on 46 minutes to make it 3-2. And Regent held on to that lead to secure the points.

Thurrock slipped down to fourth after going down to a 3-0 defeat at Theobalds Lane against a Cheshunt side who are sixth.

Well-travelled striker Stuart Zanone opened the scoring on the half-hour mark and then eventually added a second eight minutes into the second half. Five minutes later, Jason Hallett struck a third to make the points safe for the Ambers.

Harlow Town now complete the top five and they won 2-0 at the Harlow Arena against Bury Town.

Layne Eadie gave the Hawks a 31st minute lead that was doubled right on the stroke of half-time by Mario Noto.

After an eighteen league match unbeaten spell, Tilbury's run came to a halt against mid-table Aveley at Chadfields.

Abs Seymour put the Millers in front seven minutes before the break and then two minutes after it, Arian Retkoceri added a second for the visitors. Former Docker James Marrable in the visiting goal then produced some outstanding saves to keep the hosts at bay.

Thamesmead Town are ninth, nine points behind the play-off places and would have wanted more than one point from their visit to Julius Martin Lane against Soham Town Rangers.

And one would presume that Mead boss Terry Spillane was fuming afterwards as his side looked comfortable 2-0 up after goals from Theo Fairweather-Johnson after 24 minutes and a Richard Butler penalty eight minutes later.

They held that lead until Will Lawton scored what looked like a consolation effort in the 88th minute. However, Ross Paterson grabbed an unlikely point for the hosts in the final seconds.

Heybridge Swifts are now only a point in front of the drop zone after they lost 2-0 at Romford and third-bottom Barkingside picked up a point at fellow strugglers Wroxham.

George Woodward opened the scoring for Romford on 17 minutes. And Boro wrapped the game up late on when Talha Zakariya made it 2-0 on 86 minutes.

Barkingside broke the deadlock at Trafford Park after 68 minutes. But the Yachtsmen earned a share of the spoils with a 74th minute Nathan Stone equaliser.

Two other teams hovering just above the relegation zone met at the Village Glass Stadium and saw Witham Town fall to a 3-2 defeat to visiting Haringey Borough.

Haringey opened the scoring when Ishmail Kamara scored on 36 minutes. Witham left it late to level the scores when Ryan Charles made it 1-1 on 76 minutes. But Haringey looked to have sealed the win when the made it 2-1 through Scott Olumide Durojaiye’s goal 5 minutes from time.

Witham, however, equalised through Tom Cocklin on 90 minutes to make it 2-2. Haringey, though, then broke Witham hearts when Rakim Richards made it 3-2 to the visitors 4 minutes into stoppage time.

Second-bottom Redbridge suffered a 1-0 defeat at Great Wakering Rovers.

And to make matters worse for the Motormen, it was former Redbridge striker Jacob Cleaver who scored the only goal in the 16th minute.

Waltham Abbey enjoyed only their third win of the season to date when they triumphed 2-1 at mid-table Phoenix Sports.

And they had to come back from being a 23rd minute Adrian Stone goal down to win, courtesy of a brace from Christian Assombalonga – brother of Nottingham Forest`s Britt - in the 31st and then on the hour-mark.
