Saturday's Ryman North action review

By David Watters

AFC Sudbury moved seven points clear at the top of the Ryman North table on Saturday after a 4-0 win at bottom-markers Redbridge, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Craig Parker proved to be the Suffolk side`s hero with a hat-trick, starting as early as the third minute with a penalty.

Luke Callander made it 2-0 with 20 minutes gone on the clock and it was virtually all over as a contest when Parker added his second and Sudbury`s third with six minutes of the first half remaining.

A more subdued second period saw Parker eventually complete his hat-trick with another penalty after he had been brought down in the box on 72 minutes.

Redbridge had the chance of netting a consolation when they were also awarded a spot-kick but Jay Knight`s effort was saved by Marcus Garnham.

AFC Hornchurch moved into second spot after winning 2-1 at Bridge Road against Soham Town Rangers.

George Purcell gave the Urchins a great start with a goal inside the opening five minutes. However, Craig Hammond equalised on 33 minutes. What turned out to be the winner for the hosts came on 67 minutes, courtesy of Junior Luke.

Long-time leaders Cray Wanderers are now third after going down to a surprise 2-1 defeat at Waltham Abbey, who moved off the foot of the table after a first win at home this season.

The Wands` fourth game without a win started well enough at Capershotts as Grant Basey put them in front from the spot after 27 minutes. But Christian Assombalonga – brother of Britt – equalised seven minutes after the break and six minutes later Rimmel Daniel won it for the Abbots.

Fourth-placed Thurrock also lost, going down 1-0 at Ship Lane to mid-table Phoenix Sports, for whom Harrison Carnegie was on target on 63 minutes.

Fifth-placed Harlow Town were 2-1 winners at Mill Field against Aveley.

Piers Wixon have the Hawks a 13th minute lead that a Perry Dunn own goal doubled seven minutes before the break. The Millers grabbed a late consolation from Abs Seymour.

Two other top five contenders, Brightlingsea Regent and Cheshunt, met in Essex with the home side coming back from two-down to win by the odd goal in five.

A Jake Gould own goal gave the Ambers a ninth minute boost and then Jason Hallett doubled their advantage after 24 minutes.

Crucially, Matt Cripps managed to reduce the arrears 10 minutes before the break. And then after the interval Phil Kelly equalised on 63 minutes and a Jake Turner spot-kick won it for the hosts.

Brightlingsea moved up to sixth place in the table and are two points off the play-off positions.

A place and a point behind Regent are Tilbury, who won comfortably 3-0 at second-bottom Barkingside.

Kurt Smith put the Dockers ahead after 17 minutes and Tony Martin eventually added a second on 66 minutes. Emil Aiken made sure the points went to the visitors with number three 12 minutes from time.

Dereham Town made it twelve games unbeaten and ninth place after a hard-fought 1-0 win against Romford at Aldiss Park.

The hosts were made to battle for the points by a hardworking Boro side, but they had a great chance to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty just before half-time.

But Luke Tuttle`s effort was well saved by visiting keeper Michael Gooch. The breakthrough finally came 12 minutes from the end when Jake Anema grabbed what turned out to be the only goal of the game.

Maldon & Tiptree battled to a fine 2-1 win at Ram Meadow against a Bury Town side whose top five hopes are diminishing fast.

Sam Newson gave the Jammers an early seventh minute lead with a superb volley from 25 yards. But just two minutes later the Blues were back in the game when Ollie Hughes scored with a free header at the back post.

Two minutes before half-time, the visitors went back in front when a fine run and cross from Darren McQueen saw Newson head past Neil O`Sullivan.

After the break, Maldon had a chance to increase their lead from the penalty spot. However, O’Sullivan made a great save to deny Newson a hat-trick.

Thamesmead Town edged out Great Wakering Rovers by the odd goal in five at Bayliss Avenue.

Mead`s play-off challenge looked a distant prospect when Rovers went into the break 2-0 up after goals from Jacob Cleaver after 15 minutes and Alderberto Pinto six minutes before the break.

But, no doubt with an ear-bashing from manager Terry Spillane still ringing in their ears, Mead came out a different side, equalising with a brace in two minutes from Paul Vines shortly after the restart and then the winner from Theo Fairweather-Johnson 10 minutes from time.

It ended honours even in the derby between two teams near the foot of the table, Heybridge Swifts and Witham Town at Scraley Road.

Jack Barham opened the scoring for the home side on 30 minutes. Witham came back into the game and equalised through John Watson on 56 minutes.

The visitors then took the lead on 62 minutes through Jordan Pavett. But the Swifts fought back to earn a share of the spoils when Matt Pooley made it 2-2 on 77 minutes.
