Saturday's Ryman North action review

By David Watters

A 1-0 win at Tilbury ensured that the long-time Ryman North leaders AFC Sudbury finally clinched promotion to the Premier Division on Saturday as champions, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

A first half goal scored by leading scorer Craig Parker was enough to see off the Dockers at Chadfields and take the championship.

Three of the four play-off places have also been decided, with second-placed Thurrock, Harlow Town and Cray Wanderers all through, with the final position going to either AFC Hornchurch or the current occupants or Cheshunt although mathematically Brightlingsea Regent and Thamesmead Town aren`t out of it yet.

Thurrock were the only one of the three though to win on Saturday, beating mid-table Bury Town 2-1 at Ship Lane with goals from Daniel Francis and Ross Wall – both within a minute of half-time – all after Nick Ingram had given the visitors an early seventh minute lead.

Harlow shared a 2-2 draw at Phoenix Sports, whose Billy Bennett notched a brace on 52 and 82 minutes after Jared Small had given the Hawks the lead two minutes after the break. Ibrahima Sonko equalised a minute from time.

Cray lost 1-0 at Hayes Lane against Romford, for whom James Ishmail netted the only goal on the half-hour mark.

AFC Hornchurch and Cheshunt both won 3-0 away from home - the Urchins at Haringey Borough, courtesy of Nicky Symons after nine minutes, George Purcell on 21 minutes and David Knight 16 minutes from time.

The Ambers won by the same scoreline at Trafford Park against relegation-threatened Wroxham with Jason Hallett bagging a brace in two minutes just after the half-hour mark and Liam Hope adding a third on 68 minutes.

Second-bottom Barkingside joined Redbridge in finishing in a relegation place after they lost at home to the Motormen, for whom Jay Knight was the scorer seven minutes after half-time.

Who joins them is between third-bottom Waltham Abbey, Wroxham, Heybridge Swifts and Witham Town, although the latter two have a game in hand on the others.

Swifts did their chances a power of good after beating the Abbotts 3-0 on their own Capershotts pitch, Jack Barham just before the break and then Lewis Godbold and Matt Pooley in the second sealing Waltham Abbey`s fate.

Witham also gave themselves a boost with a 3-2 Village Glass Stadium win over Soham Town Rangers – leading 3-0 at half-time thanks to Damien Green, Ryan Charles and Nathan Koranteng. They were then made to sweat after Dylan Williams and then George Darling pulled two back for the visitors.

Elsewhere, Maldon & Tiptree all-but ended Thamesmead`s top five hopes after a best-of-seven win at the Wallace Binder Group Stadium.

Rhys Henry gave the Jammers a 20th minute lead that Jack Hopkins cancelled out 14 minutes later, only for Darren McQueen to immediately restore the home side`s lead.

Adam Mills stretched it to 3-1 on 51 minutes but Paul Vines on 71 minutes and Theo Fairweather-Johnson on 86 minutes looked to have earned Terry Spillane`s side a point until Sam Newson popped up with a last-minute Jammers` winner.

Brightlingsea`s hopes also narrowed considerably after being held to a goalless draw at home by Aveley.
