Saturday's Ryman North review

By David Watters

Aveley were the biggest winners on the opening day of the Ryman North season on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The Millers beat Ware – switched back from the Evo-Stik League Southern Division One Central – 5-2 at Mill Field.

Olumbe Olliwatimilehain gave the hosts a 10th minute lead that the experienced Brian Haule cancelled out four minutes later.

Haule then put Ware in front five minutes later from the penalty spot, only for Emmanuel Ighorae to restore parity just past the half-hour mark. But second half goals from sub Michael Pindy on 75 and 89 minutes, sandwiched by a second for Ighorae on 79 minutes, completed the Millers` nap hand.

There were opening day wins too for Haringey Borough, Phoenix Sports, Cheshunt, Bury Town, fancied Maldon & Tiptree, Thamesmead Town and newly-promoted pair Norwich United and Bowers & Pitsea.

Chris Benjamin bagged a brace to help Haringey beat Dereham Town 3-0 at Coles Park, while Phoenix were winners by the same scoreline at relegated Brentwood Town, with Billy Medlock scoring and two goals from Steve Carvell.

Cheshunt won 2-0 at reprieved Wroxham, courtesy of a Steve Taylor own goal and a late Joe Kizzi effort.

Bury edged out Waltham Abbey 2-1 at Ram Meadow, coming back from being a Ryan Blackman penalty down on the half-hour mark to win, thanks to Ollie Hughes and Bradley Barber.

The Jammers beat Brightlingsea Regent by the same scoreline at the Wallace Binder Group Stadium with Matt Lock and Adam Mills outgunning Jake Clowsley.

Mead also won 2-1 at Bayliss Avenue against Heybridge Swifts with Cristian Nanetti grabbing a last-gasp winner after Swifts` Callum Leahy had cancelled out Adrian Stone`s opener.

Eastern Counties League promotees Norwich United started well with a 3-1 win at Great Wakering Rovers – all the goals coming in the second half from Jamie Speller, Shaun Wones and Adam Hipperson for the Planters and Liam Nash for the hosts, who had Adelberto Pinto sent-off near the end.

Essex Senior League champions Bowers enjoyed a fine 2-0 success at relegated VCD Athletic with goals in either half from James Thomas and Tom Hine.

Fancied AFC Hornchurch were held to a goalless draw at Romford, while there were also no goals at Julius Martin Lane where Soham Town Rangers were held by Witham Town.

Elsewhere, Tilbury were ahead through Toby Aromolaran on the half-hour mark but were pegged back by Thurrock`s Ronnie Winn in the 55th minute as it ended honours even at Chadfields.
