Saturday's Ryman Premier action review

By David Watters

Leiston remain two points clear at the top of the Ryman Premier table after romping to a 4-2 win against struggling Farnborough at Victory Road on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

A 19-minute first half hat-trick from John Sands was the catalyst for the Blues to end a difficult week on a high after successive home defeats, including exiting the FA Cup.

Sands headed home Patrick Brothers' 10th minute cross and two minutes later a sweeping move ended with him sweeping home a Seb Dunbar centre being. He completed his hat-trick on 29 minutes after he was felled in the box and confidently dispatching the resulting penalty.

Farnborough, now down to ten men still caused problems before Perry Ryan fired home the second penalty of the game after a foul by Ashlee Jones on 70 minutes. Christy Finch marked his return to the leaders with a neatly headed goal seven minutes from time before Dean Joseph-Whittingham completed the scoring with a second for the visitors a minute from the end.

Second-placed Dulwich Hamlet also hit four but kept visiting Brentwood Town at bay to record a comfortable 4-o win at Champion Hill in front of a crowd of 1,302.

Danny Waldren gave the hosts` a half-time lead with the opener on 42 minutes. Waldren bagged his and Hamlet`s second 10 minutes later and Calum Willock made it game over with a third on 65 minutes – Dan Sweeney adding a fourth seven minutes later.

Canvey Island are third after a much tougher assignment at The Prospects Stadium against Harrow Borough, the Gulls being made to wait until seven minutes from time for the breakthrough to come from Richard Halle.

Bognor Regis Town lost ground and are now fourth after being held to a 2-2 Nyewood Lane draw by East Thurrock United.

Alfie Rutherford gave the Rocks a 19th minute lead that Mitch Gilbey cancelled out a couple of minutes before the break. And when Rutherford grabbed his second of the game with less than seven minutes to go, it looked as though the hosts` were going on to win, but top marksman Sam Higgins rescued a point for the visiting Rocks with a couple of minutes remaining.

Tonbridge Angels occupy the other top five slot but they too were held to a home draw by Kingstonian.

Jake Kempton gave the K`s the lead on the half-hour mark but right on half-time Nathan Elder equalised and that`s how it ended.

Grays Athletic returned to winning ways with a 4-0 win at Mill Field against ten-man Lewes.

The second-bottom Rooks fell behind after just three minutes to a Jake Hutchings effort. The visitors` then had defender Jordan Wilson sent-off for denying a goalscoring opportunity with only 27 minutes gone on the clock and Dumebi Dumaka made them pay even dearer by netting the resulting free-kick.

Dumaka added a third 10 minutes before the break and after new Lewes boss Darren Freeman re-organised his team at half-time, Grays could only muster one more through James Stevens six minutes from time.

Hampton & Richmond Borough are seventh, but had to make do with just one point from their first visit to Bloomfields against another struggler, Needham Market.

Dean Sinclair broke the deadlock to give the Beavers a 65th minute lead that sub Ollie Fenn cancelled out with six minutes to go.

VCD Athletic remain rooted to bottom spot after losing 3-1 at Earlsmead against Hendon.

Lee Smith gave the Greens the boost of an early third minute lead and Sam Flegg doubled that five minutes before the break. Kojo Awotwi pulled one back for the Vickers with 20 minutes remaining but sub Goldy Capela made sure there was to be no comeback with a Greens` third 10 minutes from the end.

Billericay Town moved up to eleventh after a 2-0 New Lodge win against Leatherhead.

Jo Ellul gave the Blues the boost of an eighth minute lead. And on the hour-mark Louis Hazlewood doubled their advantage – and they managed to keep a clean sheet after that.

Merstham are finding it tough at the moment and were beaten 2-0 at the Moatside Stadium by Wingate & Finchley.

Ola Sogbanmu put the visitors, who made a great start to the season before dropping off, a 27th minute lead. And Lee Barney made sure the points went to North London with a second 16 minutes from the end.

Wingate`s neighbours Enfield Town beat Staines Town 2-1 at the Queen Elizabeth II Stadium.

Corey Whitely gave the home side a 36th minute lead that Samir Bihmoutine added to just before half-time. Jack Hutchinson `won` the second half for the Swans with a 62nd minute reply but they weren`t able to find a leveller.

Elsewhere, Burgess Hill Town are now up to tenth after a 4-2 success against inconsistent Metropolitan Police at Leylands Park.

The Hillians were behind to a 22nd minute Charlie Collins penalty but by the time sub Ify Onwuachu scored the Met`s second six minutes from time, the hosts had scored four times.

Pat Harding levelled on 24 minutes and two minutes later Joe Keehan gave the home side the lead from the spot.

A second spot-kick, the third of the game on 62 minutes and converted again by Keehan, made it 3-1 with Chris Smith adding the fourth on 72 minutes.
