Saturday's Ryman Premier action review

By David Watters

With Dulwich Hamlet involved in the FA Trophy on Saturday, Tonbridge Angels took advantage to move to the top of the Ryman Premier table on goal difference, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

But the Angels had to make do with just one point after battling back for a 2-2 draw at the Moatside Stadium against Merstham.

The high-flyers struggled in the first half and trailed 2-0 at the break to a Charlie Penny brace in the 11th and 24th minutes. However, the Angels came storming back after the break and pulled one back on 56 minutes with a debut goal for Simon Thomas. And a minute later they were level, courtesy of a Nathan Elder header.

Kingstonian are third after a 2-0 win at Wheatsheaf Park against Staines Town.

K`s led through Ricky Sappleton`s 34th minute effort but the Swans were well in the game until they had Jeremy Boakye dismissed for a second bookable offence in the 65th minute. The ten-men conceded a second in stoppage time, sub Malachi Hudson the scorer.

Billericay Town and Hampton & Richmond Borough both moved into the top five after both recorded 3-1 wins on Saturday.

The Essex outfit pushed Hendon deeper into trouble at New Lodge, taking a 13th minute lead through Joe Ellul. Teddy Nesbitt eventually doubled the Blues` lead on the hour-mark and then, after sub Tony Taggart had reduced the deficit five minutes from time, Onome Sodje made it 3-1 on 87 minutes.

The Beavers recorded a similar outcome at the Beveree against inconsistent Grays Athletic. But it wasn`t until the hour-mark that the home side made the breakthrough, thanks to Nicke Kabamba.

Moussa Diarra added a second on 79 minutes and Kabamba`s second a minute from time rendered Bradley Fortnam-Tomlinson`s injury-time reply as just a consolation.

Bottom-markers Lewes picked up only their eighth point of the season to date in holding eighth-placed Leiston to a 1-1 draw at the Dripping Pan.

It looked as though the Rooks were heading for yet another defeat as they trailed to Joe Francis` early fifth minute opener for the Suffolk outfit until deep into stoppage time when James Fraser popped up with the equaliser.

But Lewes are a massive eleven points behind second-bottom VCD Athletic and sixteen of the safety mark.

The Vickers shocked play-off chasing Wingate & Finchley to win 2-1 at home, coming back from an early sixth minute Rob Laney goal down to win, thanks to Donovan Simmonds on the hour-mark and then sub Lheureux Menga from the spot 10 minutes from the end.

Fourth-bottom Brentwood Town shared a goalless draw at Imber Court against Metropolitan Police, which made it an even worse day for third-bottom Farnborough, beaten 3-1 at Cherrywood Road by Leatherhead, who were also in need of the points.

But they had to come back from being a fifth minute Bogdan Vastsuk goal down to win, courtesy of Kiernan Hughes-Mason six minutes later, Kaka Dembele just past the hour-mark and then sub Ryan Mahal in injury-time.

Enfield Town earned a vital best-of-five win at Bloomfields to move level on points with a now nineteenth-placed Needham Market.

Cory Whitely gave Town a 17th minute lead that Luke Ingram eventually cancelled out seven minutes into the second period. But just two minutes later Harold Joseph restored the visitors` lead.

Nathan Livings made it 3-1 two minutes after that but a penalty from Kemal Izzet four minutes from time led to a nervy end, Town holding on to leap-frog the hosts in the table.

Burgess Hill Town moved into tenth place – a place and two points behind victims Canvey Island after a 3-2 success at Leylands Park.

Harrison Chatting put the Gulls in the lead after 18 minutes, only for Joe Keehan to level from the spot nine minutes later. Four minutes after the interval Chris Smith had the Hillians in the lead for the first time and on 67 minutes Keehan increased that advantage.

Glenn Poole pulled one back for the visitors but it came deep into time added on and too late to salvage anything from the game.
