Saturday's Ryman Premier action review

By David Watters

East Thurrock United now have to share top spot in the Ryman Premier following Saturday`s results, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The Essex Rocks were held to a goalless draw by the Sussex Rocks of Bognor Regis Town at Rookery Hill, allowing Hampton & Richmond Borough to pull level on points with East Thurrock after their 5-0 hammering of fifth from bottom Needham Markey at the Beveree.

On `Family Fun Day` at the ground and a crowd of 436, only the Beavers enjoyed themselves after a first half blitz. With just 90 seconds on the clock, Nicke Kabamba opened the Beavers` account.

Moussa Diarra headed home Josh Casey's corner to make it 2-0 with only nine minutes gone on the clock before skipper Kieran Murphy nodded home to make it 3-0 and looking like game over after 25 minutes.

Hampton made it four with nine minutes to go before half-time with what was the goal of the game from loan signing Tom Beere from 20-yards. Jamal Lowe prodded in after 57 minutes to make it a nap hand for the hosts.

Tonbridge Angels moved above inactive Dulwich Hamlet into third spot after a 3-1 success at Kingsmeadow against play-off chasing Kingstonian.

A crowd of 411 saw Andre McCollin give the K`s a great start with a goal inside the opening five minutes. And they held that lead until 20 minutes from time when Nathan Elder equalised.

Five minutes later sub Tommy Whitnell gave Angels the lead and Nick Wheeler added a third to make sure in the second minute of time added on at the end of the game.

A 73rd minute goal from Enfield Town's Corey Whitley earned them a 1-0 success at Staines Town to raise top five hopes after moving them to within four points of fifth-placed Billericay Town, whose game was off.

Leiston slipped to ninth place after a poor first half display left them a mountain to climb on their first ever trip to Farnborough, who moved to third-bottom, but still seven points adrift of the safety-mark.

The Blues trailed their hosts by three goals, courtesy of Charlie Allen after 27 and 38 minutes and then George Hallahan seconds later, and were unable to recover.

Bottom-markers Lewes shared a 1-1 Dripping Pan draw with Grays Athletic but are still eleven points behind fifth-bottom spot.

The Rooks got off to a great start with a goal inside three minutes from Ronnie Conlon. And that looked like being the winner until Bradley Fortnam-Tomlinson levelled in injury-time at the end of the game.

Fourth-bottom VCD Athletic were beaten 3-2 at Hayes Lane by a Hendon side now ten points clear of the drop zone.

Ricky Sappleton maintained his good scoring form to give the hosts a 41st minute lead. But that lasted barely two minutes as Kezie Ibe equalised.

Carl McCluskey then bagged a brace for the Greens in the 56th and 62nd minutes, and although Sappleton scored again 13 minutes from time, they weren`t able to find a leveller.

Inconsistent Canvey Island secured a 2-1 win at Earlsmead against Harrow Borough.

Steve Sheehan gave the Gulls an early ninth minute lead that Lawrence Yiga added to after 36 minutes. Marc Charles-Smith eventually replied from the penalty spot with 10 minutes left but the home side weren`t able to breach the Canvey defence again.

Merstham moved to within a place and two points of hosts Wingate & Finchley in mid-table following a 3-1 win at the Harry Abrahams Stadium.

And the Moatsiders had to come back from being an early seventh minute Antone Douglas own goal behind to win, thanks to a Charlie Penny hat-trick in the 10th, 15th and 46th minutes – the third from the spot.

And it finished all-square at Imber Court between Metropolitan Police and Burgess Hill Town, Will Salmon giving the Met a 24th minute lead that Chris Smith cancelled out 10 minutes later.
