Saturday's Ryman Premier action review

By David Watters

Hampton & Richmond Borough took another giant stride towards the Ryman League's Premier Division title on Saturday with a comfortable 5-1 victory over ten-man and relegation-threatened Brentwood Town, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Despite a great day for the Beavers, the chasing pack of East Thurrock United and Tonbridge Angels won well too, so there's still a lot of work ahead.

The countdown is on though and now two wins from their final three games will be enough to secure the championship for Alan Dowson's side.

Leon Solomon gave the Beavers the lead on 22 minutes before Mark Smith saved a Brentwood penalty two minutes later. Jamal Lowe made it 2-0 on 28 minutes before Town got one back through Alex Teniola five minutes later.

Brendan Kiernan's deflected shot immediately after half-time made it 3-1 Hampton before Martyn Stokes was dismissed for a reckless lunge on Tom Beere. Beere himself made it 4-1 on 78 minutes before substitute Charlie Moone made sure of a simple tap in with five minutes left.

East Thurrock are four points behind Hampton and won 3-1 at the Harry Abrahams Stadium against mid-table Wingate & Finchley.

After Leon Fisher gave the hosts a 31st minute lead, Sam Higgins took his tally for the season to 35 with a brace on 45 and 65 minutes – the second from the spot – and Tom Wraight made sure with a third 20 minutes from time.

Tonbridge are virtually out of the title race, although mathematically their 3-0 win at Hendon keeps them in it.

Two quick goals shortly after half-time from Nathan Elder and Charlie Webster gave Angels a two-goal cushion that Anthony Riviere added to on the hour-mark.

Fifth-placed Dulwich Hamlet produced one of their most complete performances of the season in front of 1,914 crowd as they completed the double over fellow play-off-chasers and fourth-placed Bognor Regis Town at Champion Hill.

The opening goal came in the 41st minute when Bognor failed to clear their lines and Nyren Clunis lobbed the ball back into the box for an unmarked Matt Drage to head home his first goal for the club on his 58th appearance. Dulwich pushed for a second and on 57 minutes it arrived through Dipo Akinyemi.

Enfield Town are just a point behind Hamlet after winning 2-0 at the Queen Elizabeth II Stadium against Grays Athletic, Cory Whitley proving to be their hero with a brace of spot-kicks converted in the sixth and then 90th minutes.

Kingstonian's consistent inconsistency struck again as they let a lead disappear twice against Lewes to dent their chances of a play-off place.

The Rooks took a deserved point at Kingsmeadow after Dan Bennett gave the K's the lead in the 24th minute and Jonte Smith finish well 10 minutes later to level.

K's re-took the lead with a cool finish from substitute Mitch Pinnock in the 59th minute allowed themselves to be pushed back by the Rooks. In the end it was another substitute, Jordan Badger, who scored their deserved equaliser in the final minute, just three minutes after coming on. Despite their hard-earned point, the Rooks were relegated.

A goal from Tre Mitford two minutes from time confirmed Staines Town`s Premier Division status and at the same time all-but ended Leiston`s play-off hopes.

Leiston had responded to conceding a seventh minute opener from Jonathan Hippolyte, Joe Jefford equalising and then Billy Clark putting the Blues ahead on the hour-mark. But then came the late Staines equaliser and with just three games remaining, sitting six points of the final play-off place, it is highly unlikely the Blues will sneak into the end-of-season games.

VCD Athletic`s relegation was also confirmed after they suffered a 3-1 home defeat to a Harrow Borough side who are now six points clear of the drop zone.

Dylan Cascoe gave Boro the boost of an early fourth minute lead that Marc Charles-Smith added to eight minutes before the break. But thebattling Vickers came back to level with two goals in three minutes near the end from Olalekan Bankole and Ricky Sappleton. Charles-Smith`s second of the game four minutes from time sealed the Vickers fate.

Fourth-bottom Farnborough gave themselves a massive boost by beating the team immediately above them, Needham Market, 2-0 at Bloomfields.

Ollie Bailey gave Boro the boost of an early sixth minute lead. And then Jack Smith confirmed victory with a second 11 minutes into the second period. The win leaves Boro just a point behind Market, who have played a game more.

Burgess Hill Town are seven points above the drop zone after earning a point from a goalless draw at New Lodge against Billericay Town.

Elsewhere, Metropolitan Police moved above Leatherhead into thirteenth in the table after winning 3-1 at Fetcham Grove with goals from Leon Smith after just three minutes, Orlando Smith on 62 minutes and then sub Ethan Chislett a minute from time – Matt Bodkin having equalised just before half-time.

Merstham`s excellent first season in the Premier continued with a 2-0 win at the Prospects Stadium against Canvey Island, courtesy of goals either side of the break from Kershaney Samuels and Calum Willock.
