Saturday's Ryman Premier action review

By David Watters

Hampton & Richmond Borough require one more point to be confirmed as Ryman Premier champions after their 3-0 victory over Grays Athletic at Mill Field on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

It may have been enough to seal it but the wait goes on - Bognor Regis Town's victory at Leiston means the race goes on.

It took until the 26th minute for the Beavers to get the first goal as Moussa Diarra headed home a corner. Hampton then killed the game with two goals in four minutes as Brendan Kiernan curled a neat shot into the bottom corner on 49 minutes before firing home the rebound from a Nicke Kabamba strike that hit the post.

With the Rocks winning at Leiston, courtesy of goals from Connor Tighe after 49 minutes and Alfie Rutherford two minutes later, it means Hampton need just a point next week at home to Enfield Town.

The Towners need a win to give them a chance of a play-off spot after they won by the same scoreline at the Queen Elizabeth II Stadium against relegation-threatened Needham Market, Bobby Devyne giving them a 36th minute lead that Harold Joseph doubled four minutes after the break.

Second-placed East Thurrock United are assured of a top five spot after a 2-0 Rookery Hill win against Harrow Borough, top marksman Sam Higgins giving the Rocks an early fourth minute lead that Tom Wraight eventually added to three minutes from time.

Tonbridge Angels confirmed their play-off place with a 3-2 Longmead win that in the end was deserved, although at times they laboured against a Merstham side who have performed admirably in their first season in the Ryman Premier.

Charlie Penny gave the Moatsiders a 21st minute lead that Nathan Elder on 41 minutes and then Nick Wheeler two minutes later turned around. Elder added his second and Angels` third just past the hour-marl, with a Penny spot-kick in stoppage time accounting for the visitors` second. Tonbridge also can take great credit in turning round last season's final placing of twentieth and securing a top five position.

Dulwich Hamlet are two points in front of Enfield after beating already-relegated Lewes 2-1 at Champion Hill in front of another terrific crowd of 2,467.

Nyren Clunis gave Hamlet the lead five minutes before half-time and Ethan Pinnock added a second right on the interval whistle. Charlie Coppola replied 11 minutes from time for the Rooks but they weren`t able to find a leveller.

Brentwood Town joined Lewes and VCD Athletic is being relegated, despite a battling 2-2 draw at home with Metropolitan Police.

Brentwood had only a slim chance of survival after Tuesday night's 2-1 defeat to Dulwich Hamlet, and were nine points behind Needham Market with three games to play. And although Needham lost 3-0 to Enfield, Brentwood`s draw meant the gap cannot be bridged.

The hosts found themselves two goals down early in the second half, after Leon Smith's 35th minute penalty and Elliott Taylor's strike on 50 minutes. But Alex Teniola hit one back with 10 minutes to go before young winger Andrew Freeman netted a leveller five minutes later.

Who joins that trio though is really tightening up after fourth-bottom and a seemingly doomed Farnborough a few weeks back, won 1-0 at Fetcham Grove against Leatherhead, thanks to a 26th minute Charlie Allen goal, to move to within a point of Needham Market with a game in hand.

Hendon, whose game was postponed today, and Burgess Hill Town are also still in trouble, while Staines Town are probably okay on fifty-one points.

The Hillians shared a 3-3 draw at The Prospects Stadium against Canvey Island, but were 3-0 up and a win would just about made them safe.

Luc Doherty after 35 minutes, Pat Harding four minutes later and Curtis Gayler three minutes after that sent the visitors into the break three-up.

But a penalty from veteran Cliff Akurang eight minutes after the restart gave the Gulls hope and then sub Martin Tuohy reduced the deficit to one on 78 minutes, with Harrison Chatting equalising two minutes later.

Elsewhere, already-doomed VCD lost 2-0 at the Harry Abrahams Stadium to Wingate & Finchley, whose Billy Healey after 41 minutes and Jake Hutchings on 81 minutes were on target.
