Saturday's Ryman South review

By David Watters

Hastings United are one of the favourites for promotion from Ryman South and they began the 2016-17 season in style, beating South Park 4-1 at the Pilot Field on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Former Maidstone United favourite Steve Watt cancelled out Joe Jackson`s early opener for the visitors right on half-time. And then United added further goals from on-loan Jay May, Watt again and Matt Bodkin.

There were also opening day home wins for Corinthian-Casuals, Dorking Wanderers, Ramsgate and Molesey.

First half goals from Jamie Cottee and a Jason Mensah own goal eventually proved enough for Casuals, despite Ryan Fowler`s reply, while Tom Tolfrey`s 55th minute goal proved enough for Dorking against Southern Counties East League champions Greenwich Borough.

The Rams beat Guernsey 2-1 at Southwood with Joe Taylor bagging a brace wither side of a Dominic Heaume equaliser.

The Moles saw off East Grinstead Town, courtesy of goals in either half from Ross Chalke and Joe Nwoko.

Relegated and now title-favourites Lewes, Hythe Town, Carshalton Athletic and Faversham Town were all away winners on Saturday.

The Rooks started well by winning 2-1 at Chipstead, coming back from being an Everaldo Felix goal down to win in the second half through a Dan Perry penalty and Alex Lang.

Alfie May`s 83rd minute effort proved enough for Hythe at Godalming Town, switched from the Evo-Stik League Southern Division One Central, and Ricky Korboa bagged a brace to see Carshalton to a 3-1 victory at Southern Combination champions Horsham.

First half goals from Josh Stanford and Dean Grant proved enough for Faversham at Moatside against Walton Casuals.

Cray Wanderers found themselves 3-1 down at Hayes Lane against Sittingbourne with less than a minute to go before sub Max Williams and Sean Roberts rescued a 3-3 draw – Miles Cornwell had bagged two for `Bourne.

It finished goalless between Three Bridges and Chatham Town, and 1-1 at Imperial Fields between Tooting & Mitcham United and Herne Bay, whose Sam Hasler gave them a 25th minute lead that Billy Dunn cancelled out nine minutes later.
