Shot of the Season: Martin Addison

We asked our fabulous photographers to pick their favourite photograph of the Pitching In Isthmian campaign, and explain why it’s important to them. Up first, Martin from the blue corner of North London

When was the image taken (match, event, etc)?

It was taken at the Wingate & Finchley vs Bowers & Pitsea fixture on 14th February 2023 and shows our keeper, Ben Goode, celebrating scoring the equalising goal to make it 3-3.  The final result was 4-3 to Wingate & Finchley in an amazing turn around from being 3-0 down.

Why is it important to you?

I feel this game was the key point in our season – snatching victory from the jaws of defeat.  It represents the success of the management team in building a sense of belief in the players – despite being in a losing position, their heads didn’t drop and this was the outcome.  It was still a struggle against relegation through the rest of February and March and we were not mathematically safe until the Potters Bar game on April 10th.

Where can we find the rest of your work?

How and why did you begin taking photographs at football matches?

I attended my first football match at Wingate & Finchley in the 2006/7 because my Son wanted to see a live game – otherwise I wouldn’t have got involved at all. I enjoyed the experience and stayed.  Seeing that the club didn’t have a photographer, I offered my ‘transport photographer’ services and I’ve been shooting matches since. Although I don’t get to every game, this season I passed 500 photographed matches for the club.

What are your hopes for the forthcoming season?

I’d settle for a season of mid-table mediocrity... But that isn’t the Wingate & Finchley way!
