Spurs legend is chief cheerleader!

By David Watters

Spurs legend Gary Mabbutt and Watford Ladies striker Kim Farrow will be helping to hand out the honours at the Ryman League's Boux Avenue Women's Cup Final on Thursday night.

Charlton Athletic Women and Tottenham Hotspur Ladies face each other in the final for the second season in a row in a 7.30pm kick off at Cheshunt's Theobalds Lane.

As part of the Football Association’s efforts to promote the women’s game, Farrow was invited to the final. Along with Mabbutt and representatives of sponsors Boux Avenue and Ryman League chairman Nick Robinson, the 23-year-old ex-Leicester City star will present the trophy to the winners.

Now 54, the legendary defender is backing the Spurs Ladies for the second season in a row as they bid to win their first silverware since lifting the London County Cup in 2012.

Mabbutt made nearly 500 appearances for the Lilywhites during a 16 year spell at White Hart Lane from 1992 to 1998, including 11 as captain.

The former England defender won the UEFA Cup in 1984 and skippered Tottenham to FA Cup glory in 1991 while living with diabetes, becoming an icon for many children and young adults with the condition.

One of the most respected figures in football for his work since hanging up his boots, he was awarded an MBE in 1994 and is currently an ambassador for Tottenham Hotspur and the Football Association, an ambassador for the Prince's Trust and patron of Diabetes UK.

Lingerie specialists Boux Avenue took over the sponsorship of the cup two seasons ago when the Ryman Group renewed and expanded its long-running partnership to 19 years.

Another Ryman Group company, homewares retailer Robert Dyas, also took over the sponsorship of the Robert Dyas League Cup, the Robert Dyas Vets Cup, the Robert Dyas Disability Cup and the Robert Dyas Youth Play-off Cup.

The Boux Avenue Women's Cup attracted a record number of clubs again this season with Billericay Town, Bury Town, Burgess Hill Town, Carshalton Athletic, Charlton Athletic, Gillingham, Harlow Town, Hampton & Richmond Borough, Herne Bay, Phoenix Sports, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham all entering last September.

To reach successive finals, holders Charlton Athletic Women beat Ryman League representatives Herne Bay 9-0 while Spurs overcame West Ham 5-0 in their respective semi-finals back in January.
