Top stopper celebrates third win

By David Watters

After helping his side win the Ryman South championship over Easter, Folkestone Invicta's Tim Roberts is looking forward to collecting his third Precision Goalkeeping Golden Gloves accolade of the season.

Named on Monday alongside East Thurrock United's Lukas Lidakevicius in the Ryman Premier and Cheshunt's James May in Ryman North, Roberts is sharing the penultimate laurels of the campaign in Ryman South with Faversham Town's William Godmon after both posted identical records in March.

The monthly competition was sponsored for the first time last season by Nottingham-based Reydon Sports PLC - the UK's largest sports and leisure wholesale and distribution company - and thanks to their Precision Goalkeeping brand, the four stoppers will receive a pair of Precision Goalkeeping gloves, the prizes provided by ProKit UK, the nominated retailer administering the monthly competition on behalf of Precision Training.

Lithuanian U21 international Lidakevicius has made quite an impression at Rookery Hill since arriving last summer from the Lithuanian A Lyga to replace David Hughes.

To win his first award of the season and help the second-placed Rocks keep their promotion push on track, the 22-year-old conceded just twice in five outings in March, a 2-1 defeat at Leatherhead the only blemish on his record of four clean sheets in three wins and a draw.

Cheshunt's May switched to the Ambers last September from Waltham Abbey after starring for the Abbotts last season in their record-breaking FA Cup run to the third qualifying round. In four outings last month the 28-year-old conceded just twice to help keep his now sixth-placed side's promotion play-off hopes alive heading into the final month of the campaign.

Former Chatham Town, Croydon, Erith Town, Sittingbourne and Dulwich Hamlet keeper Roberts, collected the Ryman South's honours in December and January as the champions march to the title took off.

No stranger to league or club awards since arriving at Invicta’s Fullicks Stadium back in September 2013 from Walton & Hersham, the 27-year-old conceded three goals in five wins and a draw, keeping his second clean sheet of the month on Good Friday when Invicta hammered Walton & Hersham 6-0 to win the title.

Faversham Town are currently fifth and pushing hard to secure a promotion play-off spot thanks to the efforts of former Chelsea stopper Godmon who arrived at Salters Lane back in September 2015 on loan from Maidstone United, a deal that has subsequently been extended.

Like Roberts, the 20-year-old conceded three times in five outings in March, his performances helping the Lilywhites post a record of four wins and a single reverse.

Precision Goalkeeping boast an impressive list of keeping talent on their books including Kasper Schmeichel, Kieren Westwood, Tomasz Kuszczak, Darren Randolph, David Forde, Frank Fielding, Brian Jensen, Robert Olejnik, Andy Lonergan, Ian McLoughlin, Trevor Carson and Republic of Ireland goalkeeping coach and former international Alan Kelly.

Former England manager Graham Taylor is lead ‘brand ambassador’ for the company which was established in 2005 and also has official partnerships with the Irish Football Association and the Football Association of Wales.
