Town leave it late- but three late goals bring three points and third place

Bury Town have to fight hard for victory at Gorleston- but make it six wins in a row

Bury Town brought their magnificent form to Gorleston last night, and after being held for seventy three minutes managed, somehow, to score three in the closing stages and climb to third.

Town had taken a colossal twenty eight points from their previous ten matches, and were unbeaten for more than three months- but postponements had seen them kick their heels for two and a half weeks so we wondered whether there would be any rust to shake off. Their hosts had hit a little patch of inconsistency, but knew that victory would lift them into the top ten.

Town midfielder Ethan Mayhew is not a regular supplier of goals- indeed he is more celebrated for his tackling prowess than his goalscoring- and went into last night’s fixture having scored only twice in his previous thirty matches. By the end of the match he had doubled that tally, taking on the burden from striker Cemal Ramadan, who had a rare off-night in front of goal after scoring in his previous seven matches.

There were but sixteen minutes left when Mayhew opened the scoring, and we were into added time at the end before he made quite sure of three points for his side, finally ending the greens resistance by making it two-nil. Somehow there was also time for a third, Luke Brown on from the bench to score his sixteenth goal of the season, and it ensured that Town climb to third- twelve points behind leaders Lowestoft Town with two games in hand, and perhaps just as importantly eight points clear of sixth place Basildon United- coincidentally the last side to beat them, back in mid November.

Gorleston are down in twelfth.
