Will the Millers or the Nuts and Bolts be top tonight?

By Ian Townsend

With seven points separating the top six it's all to play for in the Pitching In Isthmian South East Division. Here's our preview of today's fixtures.

Cray Valley PM last tasted defeat on September 14th, so it’s no surprise that they’re at the top of the table- although perhaps it highlights the strength of the division that their lead is only two points. They head to Whitehawk, currently in twelfth place after a campaign that has generally seen them look better in the cups than in the league. That said, they were very impressive in victory at Sevenoaks Town last weekend and have had some rather positive moments- but they tend to either be excellent or the opposite!

Ashford United have won seven of their last nine, but fell to defeat in Sussex last weekend and head back there to face Burgess Hill Town. The Hillians saw an eight match unbeaten run come to an end against Corinthian and will hope to start another, but they couldn’t have had many more difficult opponents against which to do it.

Haywards Heath Town, in third, travel to face at East Grinstead Town side who have made so many signings they are unrecognisable from a few weeks ago. Heath have hit a sticky spot, with only one win in their last five, whilst for the Wasps every spot has been a sticky spot, as they don’t have a win in ten- but as mentioned, they have rather a different squad these days.

Ramsgate also take on Sussex opposition, as they welcome our draw specialists Three Bridges. The match is free to enter, and the Rams are seven matches unbeaten; whilst Bridges have only won two of their last ten- but then they’ve only lost three of them! The visitors have lost fewer matches than fifth place Hastings United, but have drawn so many they sit in fifteenth place.

The aforementioned Hastings travel to face the side one place below them, Herne Bay. United have won four of their last five and seem to have escaped their slump, whilst Bay have only two defeats in ten. The two drew one-one on opening day.

We’ve an all-green battle as VCD Athletic host Chichester City. Athletic have dropped to seventh, seven points off the top five courtesy of a run of three defeats, but they did wallop Lancing last time out; whilst City defeated title challengers Ashford United last weekend and have only one defeat in seven.

Lancing host eighth place Sittingbourne. The Brickies have four points from six but two defeats prior to that saw them fall away from the top five, whilst the hosts have gone eight matches without a win and need to start collecting points having slipped to third bottom.

Corinthian, winners at Burgess Hill last weekend, welcome Hythe Town as tenth plays eleventh. Only goal difference separates the two at start of play.

Faversham Town, in fourteenth, welcome a Phoenix Sports side who finally got a point last weekend after twelve consecutive league defeats. The Lilywhites have only lost three of their last ten, but have slipped down the table because they only managed to win three of them. The opening day fixture between the two went the way of today’s hosts.

Finally, Sevenoaks Town welcome Whitstable Town. The Oysterboys travel on the back of three consecutive wins- nine points which have seen them climb out of the bottom three to end up only three points behind their hosts. Oaks have been consistently inconsistent of late, with three wins, a draw and six defeats from their last ten matches- and they’ll need to quickly put last weekend’s walloping by Whitehawk behind them.
