Blues could clinch the title- but visitors Enfield Town are in similar desperate need of points

By Ian Townsend

Bishop's Stortford could win the title with victory if other results go their way- whilst the battle for fifth place reaches a critical stage, with Wands, Towners and Rooks the chief contenders

Bishop’s Stortford find themselves four points clear at the top of Pitching In Isthmian Premier, and go into the penultimate weekend of the regular season knowing that one more win might be enough. The Blues welcome an Enfield Town side who have gone four matches without a win- a run which saw them removed from the top five last weekend- and who will be desperate for three points of their own as they look to keep their play off dreams alive. Stortford have won the last four meetings between the clubs- including a one-nil win at Donkey Lane in December, a match which saw three Town players dismissed, as well as one for the Blues.

Second place Hornchurch will be looking to hammer the last nail into Bowers & Pitsea’s survival hopes at Bridge Avenue, whilst hoping that Enfield Town are doing them a favour elsewhere. One win in six has seen the Urchins title hopes take a battering, and they have four points to make up over the leaders; whilst Bowers are six points from safety with two games to go, needing Kingstonian to lose both of their remaining fixtures whilst they win both of theirs. The Urchins won two-nil when the sides met at the Len Salmon.

Canvey Island are five points behind the leaders with a game in hand, and if they can win at Folkestone Invicta will keep the title race alive for a little longer even if Stortford win. The Gulls are in superb form, eleven matches unbeaten, and will want to keep that going on the Kent coast, as even if they fail to catch the Blues they will want a home play off Semi-Final spot. Invicta ended a five match winless run with victory at Margate on Monday, and will want revenge for a three-nil defeat on the Island in December, a match which saw Bradley each score three goals.

Fourth place Aveley welcome Horsham to Parkside, in a match between our last two velocity Cup winners. The Millers still have a mathematical possibility of taking the title with three matches remaining, although it would take something of a miracle- but they’d very much like to take home advantage into the play offs, and given one of their three remaining matches is against Canvey won’t believe that goal unachievable. Their defeat to Stortford last time out was their first in almost two months, ending a twelve match unbeaten run. The Hornets are four points away from the top five with two games remaining, and may find the gap to fifth place too big to bridge, but have also been in good form, with two defeats from ten. The two sides have already met twice this season, the Hornets coming from two-nil and three-two down to knock the Millers out of the FA Trophy, and their league match ending with a late, late Horsham equaliser in a two-two draw.

Fifth place Cray Wanderers are seven games undefeated- with six victories, having found form at just the right time. Wands welcome Kingstonian to Hayes Lane, the K’s still needing one more point to guarantee their safety. The hosts need another victory, as anything less could let Enfield Town or Lewes overhaul them in the race for fifth- whilst for the visitors, defeat could leave them needing to get something from Hornchurch on the final day of the season. A Sam Wood goal was the difference between the two sides in December.

Lewes welcome Haringey Borough knowing that victory may be the only way to keep their play off dreams alive. The Rooks have lost only one of their last ten and were excellent in victory at Bognor on Monday; whilst Borough have lost only one of their last six and benefitted their hosts by scoring a late equaliser at Enfield Town on Monday. The North Londoners have travelled to Sussex three times this season, winning at Bognor, drawing at Horsham and losing at Hastings- whilst the Rooks have fewer home defeats than any side in the Division.

Hastings United are six points behind fifth place Cray Wanderers, albeit with a game in hand. You can be sure they won’t give up their chase until it becomes mathematically impossible, and they welcome a Bognor Regis Town side still smarting from that defeat against Lewes on Monday, a defeat made worse when you point out that the Rooks played for seventy seven minutes with ten men, so we’re sorry for pointing it out! The first meeting between the clubs this season ended goalless.

Potters Bar Town welcome Carshalton Athletic at the Lantern Stadium with only final league positions to play for, both sides free of worries at either end of the table; whilst you can say very much the same about Billericay Town’s match with Margate at New Lodge- the Blues have reduced admission prices for this one, six pounds for adults the headline news.

Wingate & Finchley, safe in sixteenth place, welcome Herne Bay- who are anything but safe. The visitors are six points from safety, and need to win both of their remaining matches whilst hoping that Kingstonian lose both of theirs- whilst also hoping that the directly above them, Bowers & Pitsea, perform poorly over the next eight days. A run of one win from six looks to have cooked Bay’s goose, whilst their hosts will be in fine spirits after winning their last two.

Finally, our bottom two, both already confirmed as relegated, have only pride to play for at the Taydal. Brightlingsea Regent play host to Corinthian-Casuals with planning for next season already underway.
