Can the Scholars go four clear?

By Ian Townsend

We’ve four matches in Pitching In Isthmian Premier tonight, and only one of the top five in action- but it’s the leaders. Here’s our preview.

It’s tight at the top of the table, with only two points between the top three- but our leaders, Potters Bar Town, can open up a bit of a gap if they can defeat Lewes at the Lantern Stadium this evening. The Scholars have actually been slightly better away from home this season, but they have won five of their eight league matches on their own patch, whilst tonight’s visitors have not had a great time on the road. The Rooks only league victory away from home so far this season came just down the road from the Scholars, at Enfield Town, but they are seven league matches unbeaten.

The Rooks won here last season- but they were also thumped by the Scholars on their own patch.

We’ve eighth v ninth as Horsham play host to Cray Wanderers. The sides are level on points and level on goal difference, the Hornets ahead only on goals scored- and they were level the last time they met, too, a two-two draw back in February. The Hornets goal scorers on that occasion were Will Miles and Tom Day, and Day remains with the club and scored his first goal of the season in victory over Herne Bay on Saturday; whilst Wands scorers Chris Dickson and Cameron Brodie have both moved on. The Hornets have only beaten Wands once in their last sixteen attempts.

Bognor Regis Town, down in fifteenth place, welcome a side four places and seven points behind them as Bowers & Pitsea head to the Sussex coast. Bowers will be buoyed by the weekend’s win over title-chasing Aveley- their first league win in nearly three months, but a big one- whilst the Rocks were in Trophy action, coming through against Sussex rivals Lewes on penalties and awaiting the draw for the next round as one of our last two remaining Premier representatives. The Rocks defeated these opponents in the Trophy as recently as October 8th.

In the blue corner of North London, Wingate & Finchley welcome Corinthian-Casuals. The hosts are three points clear of the bottom four and seven clear of their second bottom visitors, and the Blues brought a four game losing run to an end with victory at Cray Wanderers at the weekend. Casuals have only two league wins all season, and lost to Bognor last time out, but have looked much improved under new management and will be targeting this match for a most-needed three points.

A number of our Premier Division sides are in action in the Velocity Cup.

In the Third Round Herne Bay welcome Sevenoaks Town, whilst Kingstonian are on the road to Leatherhead.

The Fourth Round has a North London derby between Haringey Borough and Enfield Town, a Kent seaside derby between Margate and Folkestone Invicta, and a Sussex seaside derby between Whitehawk and Hastings United.
