Hornets sting Rocks, but Scholars and Millers still lead the way

By Ian Townsend

Horsham hit four, and we’ve wins for Aveley, Invicta, Hornchurch, Wands, K’s and Regent. It’s our Pitching In Isthmian Premier Bank Holiday Monday round up.

Potters Bar Town held on at the top of the table, coming from behind to defeat local rivals Enfield Town at the Lantern Stadium. Lyle Della Verde got his third of the season to give the Towners an early lead, only for Mo Kamara to equalise before the first half was half over. A draw looked like the likely option, before two minutes from time Quentin Monville stepped up with another late goal to earn all three points for the Scholars- his third of the campaign. Much of the five hundred and thirty one in attendance were delighted.

Aveley have clearly demonstrated that their aberration against Bognor Regis Town ten days ago was a freak of nature, and continued their good form with victory over Corinthian-Casuals. The Millers have won four out of five, this one by two goals to one, and are second. Oscar Shelvey gave them the lead on twenty five minutes, Harry Gibbs gave them a cushion midway through the second half, and although Olu Babajide got one back for the visitors three minutes from time the Millers were able to hold on.

Folkestone Invicta remain unbeaten, and held on to defeat Herne Bay and delight most of the nine hundred and twenty six at the BuildKent Stadium. Kadell Daniel gave the hosts the lead on eleven minutes, Adam Yusuff made it two-nil six minutes after the restart, only for Kieron Campbell to pull one back for the visitors with twenty one minutes left. The equaliser didn’t arrive, and Invicta are third.

Horsham got back to winning ways in style, hammering Bognor Regis Town in a Sussex derby. The opener came from Lucas Rodrigues just before the break- the Hornets number seven scoring for the third game in a row- and it was two twelve minutes later, a fifth of the season for Jack Mazzone. Any chance of a comeback for the visitors ended when Sam De St Croix saw red, and the ten men conceded two more, Mazzone getting number six for the campaign and sub Daniel Ajakaiye adding another late on. The Hornets are fourth, and one thousand and fifty eight watched on.

Fifth place Hornchurch held on to defeat Bishop’s Stortford, as seven hundred and twenty three watched on. David Smith gave the Urchins the lead just before the half hour, and Sam Higgins doubled their advantage ten minutes later. Chris Harris made the closing stages interesting by pulling a goal back with seventeen minutes left, but the Urchins held on to take all of the points.

Lewes remain unbeaten, but must be starting to worry about the number of draws they are collecting. That’s three draws from five now, as they were held to a goalless stalemate by Hastings United, and it sees them drop to sixth. United end the weekend in sixteenth.

One thousand, six hundred and forty nine weren't given much to sing about.

Cray Wanderers are up to seventh after Dan Bassett scored the only goal of the game against Margate. Bassett started the game on the bench, came on after twenty six minutes to replace Nyren Clunis, and had found the back of the Blues net within two minutes of his arrival.

Canvey Island got off to a great start at Bowers & Pitsea, Elliott Ronto scoring after just nine minutes, but they had to be content with just one point. Emmanuel Oluwasemo delighted the Len Salmon faithful with an equaliser eight minutes after the break, and that was that. The Gulls sit eighth, whilst Bowers are twentieth.

After four consecutive draws, Kingstonian finally picked up a win- Carshalton Athletic their victims. Dwight Pascal opened the scoring for the K’s five minutes before the break , Fumnaya Shomotun made it two six minutes after the restart, and although Crossley Lema got one back for the Robins with twenty one minutes left, the hosts held out. K’s climb to tenth, Athletic slip to twelfth.

Haringey Borough and Wingate & Finchley couldn’t manage a goal between them on White Hart Lane. Five hundred and thirty seven watched on.

Billericay Town fans must be wondering what’s happening. Amongst the favourites for promotion after last season’s relegation, the Blues have now lost four of their five matches, the latest defeat coming at the hands of Brightlingsea Regent at the Taydal. Regent had five players booked, with nobody going into the book for Town, but they also got the only goals- two of them, as Zack Littlejohn opened the scoring just after the break and Ollie Sotoyinbo got the clincher midway through the second half. The Blues are rock bottom, Regent thirteenth, but it’s a marathon, not a sprint!
