Invicta legend heads Faversham way

Matt Newman agrees to move to Faversham Town

Faversham Town may have had their relegation from the Pitching In Isthmian League confirmed, but they have already begun their recruitment for next season with the announcement that Folkestone Invicta stalwart Matt Newman will be joining the club in the summer.

Matt has been a big part of the setup at Invicta for a decade, playing three hundred and sixty two times in stripes- including twenty five so far this season. Starting out as a midfielder before converting to defence, he was a South Division champion as well as being a big part of a number of successful Premier Division sides. His departure was confirmed last week, and it has now been confirmed that he will soon become a Lilywhite.

Faversham chair Chairman Gary Smart explained:

"I tried approaching Folkestone many times this season to sign Matt Newman for the Lilywhites, but with his commitment and loyalty to Folkestone and the club’s reluctance to let him leave, he was not going to be swayed even with our professional working relationship, this is very rarely seen in the game at any level and we commend Matt for that stance.

He leaves Folkestone after 10 years of service and a true Invicta legend.

Matt and I have business interests together, and working with Matt professionally over the years, you get to know the man as well. His honesty, loyalty and commitment is what Faversham Town Football Club needs to take us forward on this exciting journey. Even after we knew our own fate last weekend, Matt still wanted to be part of the new project at Faversham for the next few years."
