My First XI: Matt Jones

By Ian Townsend

We asked our supporters to pick- and explain- their Team of the campaign from amongst the players they’ve watched this season. Matt, courtesy of Horsham, picks our first Pitching In Isthmian Premier XI

GK - Jack Giddens (Bishop’s Stortford) - most league clean sheets for a second year running says it all.

RB - George Wind (Billericay) - put in a superb performance against us when we visited them. Couldn’t handle him.

CB - Michael Chambers (Billericay) - an absolute giant of a centre back. Cleared practically every set piece we threw at him.

CB- Matt Johnson (Bishop's Stortford)

LB - Harvey Sparks (Horsham) - a lot of good full-backs in this league but Harv has got to be the best. Brilliant both defensively and going forward, and easily our most consistent performer. No surprise seeing him sweep up our end of season awards.

CM - Charlie Hester-Cook (Horsham) - transformed our midfield when he returned from injury. A true powerhouse of a midfielder.

CM - Tom Champion (Lewes) - think he might be a defender but played midfield in the games I saw him. Mopped up everything, a relief to see him retire.

CM - Joe Paxman (Canvey Island) - another solid, consistent performer.

RW - Razz Coleman De Graft (Lewes) - unplayable at times. Some of his goals have been truly world class.

ST - Sam Higgins (Hornchurch) - unbelievable goal return. Probably has the most natural goal scoring instinct I’ve seen in this league.

LW - Frankie Merrifield (Bishop’s Stortford) - doubt they’d have won the league without him. Has such a noticeable impact on any game he plays in.

Thanks Matt. Right, who’s next? If you’d like to pick your team of the year, then go ahead! Choose your First XI, explain your choices, send them to Ian at townsendaround@gmail.com, and Bob’s the brother of your mother. They’ll appear here soon.
