Saturday's Ryman North action review

By David Watters

Inactive AFC Sudbury`s lead at the top of the Ryman North table was only cut by one point on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Second-placed Harlow Town had to make do with a point from a 2-2 draw at Dereham Town.

Leon Antoine gave the Hawks an 11th minute lead that Ryan Crisp cancelled out eight minutes later. A minutes before the break Crisp curled in a free-kick to take the hosts into the break 2-1 up.

The visitors missed the chance to equalise soon after the second half started when Alex Read, who had been brought down, saw his penalty saved by Will Viner. But 14 minutes from time Fabion Simms grabbed the Hawks` equaliser.

Third-placed AFC Hornchurch added to Wroxham`s relegation worries with a comfortable 3-0 win at Bridge Road.

George Purcell broke the deadlock to give the Urchins the lead right on half-time.

Five minutes after the break, Purcell doubled his and the hosts` tally and then new signing Tameson Eyong added a third 13 minutes from time.

Thurrock and Cheshunt complete the top five and both won on Saturday.

Mark Stimson`s side eased to a 4-1 Ship Lane victory over Great Wakering Rovers.

Junior Baker gave Thurrock an 18th minute lead that Eljay Worrell cancelled out right on the half-time whistle.

Three minutes into the second half, Ronnie Winn restored the home side`s lead. Then, in the final two minutes, Winn again and sub Charlie Cole added two more to make sure.

Cheshunt won 2-1 at Bayliss Avenue against Thamesmead Town, taking the lead on the half-hour mark through Jason Hallett.

Mead were level just five minutes later, courtesy of a Paul Vines penalty, but Adam Bolle won it for the Ambers 16 minutes from time.

Sixth-placed Cray Wanderers could only manage a 1-1 draw at Ram Meadow against Bury Town so are two points behind Cheshunt.

Josh Mayhew broke the deadlock to give the Blues a 64th minute lead from the spot after a handball decision.

Cray levelled when Tevan Allen put through his own goal eight minutes from time, and they held on, despite seeing Aryan Tajbasksh sent-off in injury-time for a second yellow card offence.

Seventh-placed Brightlingsea Regent fell to a 3-0 home defeat against Phoenix Sports.

Sports took the lead on 34 minutes when Adrian Stone fired home. The visitors doubled their advantage after the break when Alistair Gordon made it 2-0 on 50 minutes.

And straight from the restart, Sports went further in front when Jason Goodchild made it 3-0.

Tilbury`s top five hopes also nose-dived after they were beaten 2-1 by relegation-threatened Heybridge Swifts at Scraley Road.

The win saw the home side move out of the relegation places and they are now two places and one point above the drop zone.

However, it was the Dockers who took the lead when Ollie Hanlon fired home on six minutes. But on 23 minutes, Swifts pulled the match level through Lewis Godbold.

After the break, Swifts took the lead when Jack Barham made it 2-1 on 56 minutes. And they managed to hold on to secure three valuable points.

Redbridge are now eight points adrift of the safety-mark after suffering a 6-1 home hammering by rampant Romford.

The Motormen held on until five minutes before the break when Joe Scott gave Boro the lead. Scott added a second five minutes after the interval and Tom Potter made it 3-0 just three minutes later, only for Charlie Portway to respond two minutes after that.

But Nick Reynolds on the hour-mark, Tom Anderson 11 minutes from time and Jamie Dicks in stoppage time, made the final score 6-1.

Second-bottom Barkingside gave themselves hope after edging out fellow strugglers and hosts Witham Town by the odd goal in five.

The home side took the lead through Luke With on 33 minutes. Witham pulled themselves back into the game when Nathan Koranteng scored from the penalty spot right on half-time.

The visitors took the lead for the first time when Stuart Zanone made it 2-1 on 53 minutes.

However, Barkingside pulled themselves back into the game when Michael Spencer levelled the score on 66 minutes. Spencer then put Barkingside back in front when he made it 3-2 with just two minutes to go to secure the win.
