Saturday's Ryman Premier action review

By David Watters

Hampton & Richmond Borough extended their lead at the top of the Ryman Premier table on Saturday with a hard fought 2-1 victory over Billericay Town, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The battling win took the Beavers seven points clear - and with just six games to play - four wins will now be enough to confirm the club as champions.

After a close first half, Borough took the lead on 47 minutes as Brendan Kiernan made a late run to head the ball home from a Josh Casey corner. Billericay equalised on 71 minutes as they were award a penalty which Glenn Poole slotted home.

The hosts re-took the lead 12 minutes from time when a Josh Casey free-kick was deflected, falling to Moussa Diarra who had all the time to side foot home from six yards to give the Beavers the points.

Improving Staines Town did the Beavers a favour by holding second-placed East Thurrock United to a goalless draw at Rookery Hill.

Sixth-placed Leiston suffered a first defeat in five games after being unable to recover from a clinical first half from the visiting Tonbridge Angels, who are now just a point behind the Rocks in third.

Two down just after the half-hour mark to goals from Luke Blewden from the penalty spot after 11 minutes and then Nathan Elder, the hosts rallied but only had a 75th minute Christy Finch penalty to show for their efforts. Late fine saves from Tonbridge keeper Tony Di Bernardo subsequently denied the Blues a late leveller.

Fourth-placed Dulwich Hamlet dropped two more points after sharing a 1-1 Champion Hill draw with seventeenth-placed Burgess Hill Town.

The Hillians led through Joe Keehan`s goal on the half-hour mark right until seven minutes from time when Ryan Moss ensured the majority in the good crowd of 1,452 went home a little happier.

There was a defeat though for fifth-placed Kingstonian, who lost 2-1 at the Prospects Stadium to mid-table Canvey Island, who came back from being a 49th minute Andre McCollin goal down to win.

Veteran Cliff Akurang equalised after 57 minutes and then sub Ross Johnson won it for the Gulls just past the hour-mark.

Defeats for Leiston and Kingstonian should have meant good news for the sides below them, but the only real beneficiary were Bognor Regis Town – and they were involved in the FA Trophy!

Only Enfield Town managed to pick up anything, sharing a goalless draw at Cherrywood Road against a now fourth-bottom Farnborough, who have now lost only once in the last six games.

Lewes may be well be adrift at the bottom but they`re still fighting and damaged Brentwood Town`s chances of staying up with a 1-0 win at The Arena, courtesy of Henry Muggeridge`s 51st minute effort.

The bottom four though weren`t helped by Needham Market`s 2-0 win at the team now only a place and a point ahead of them, Harrow Borough.

Ollie Mann gave the Marketmen the lead at Earlsmead three minutes before the break. And a Darryl Oakley goal on 63 minutes secured victory for the visitors and moved them seven points clear of the drop zone.

Second-bottom VDC Athletic were 3-1 up at home to mid-table Metropolitan Police before being pegged back to 3-3.

Alex Kelly gave the Vickers a 19th minute lead that Steve Sutherland cancelled out a minute before half-time. Malachi Hudson after 66 minutes and Nigel Neita four minutes later, stretched the hosts` advantage.

But a Charlie Collins penalty on 77 minutes and then an Elliot Taylor leveller six minutes from time spoiled VCD`s day and leaves them eleven points adrift of Needham Market with only eighteen left to play for.

Elsewhere, Wingate & Finchley and Leatherhead shared a 1-1 Harry Abrahams Stadium, Billy Healey`s 24th minute spot-kick being cancelled out by the Tanners` Steve Watt just before the break.
