Shot of the Season: Nicky Hayes

By Ian Townsend

We asked our fabulous photographers to pick their favourite photograph of the Pitching In Isthmian campaign, and explain why it’s important to them. Nicky takes many brilliant shots for Billericay Town, and we’re surprised he managed to pick just one

When was the image taken (match, event, etc)?

My favourite image from this season came in our home match vs Bowers & Pitsea in the Premier League match on Monday 10th April 2023.

Why is it important to you?

Montel Agyeman had scored a rare and only league goal from this season and his joy coupled with team mates Henry Lukombo, Imran Uche and Anderson Pinto made for a wonderful pic in my opinion. Plus it filled the frame perfectly as it was so close haha!

The main reason i chose this image apart from the joy was that it could be an album or CD cover pic and reminded me of a Queen cover weirdly.

Where can we find the rest of your work?

My other works can be found at nickyhayes.com

How and why did you begin taking photographs at football matches?

My photography career started back in 1990 when a friend played for Southend Utd and got me a pass to take photo's of himself (Steve Tilson). I did a reasonable job and landed the club photography job. Since then i have worked at the now defunct News of the World and The Sun as a sports photographer plus Huw Evans Picture Agency in Wales before finally landing at Billericay Town FC where i have been the last six years.

What are your hopes for the forthcoming season?

This coming season I would like to see BTFC putting in a strong challenge for winning the Pitching In Isthmian Premier League.

If you're a photographer who would like to send in their shot of the season, please answer the questions above and email to Ian on townsendaround@gmail.com
